I have always found it easy to apply myself and get results very quickly, whether in my current role as Head of IT, or previous occupations of radio producer, magazine researcher or full-time musician. But when it came to kung fu, I discovered that I needed to put the hours in to get the benefit: there are no shortcuts. Despite this, of everything I have done in my life, nothing compares to my dedication to my martial art, or the way it sparks my passion.
Kung fu has had a positive impact on every aspect of my life. Without doubt it has made me a better and more-rounded person. Its practise shows you that anything, no matter how difficult, is achievable if you believe in yourself and have the discipline to carry on in the face of any obstacle.
I want to help people to access not only the proven health benefits but also the potentially life-changing experiences to be had through learning the style. I believe you need to train kung fu to be part of you, so that it will be there for you when you need it. My students will all learn to defend themselves unconsciously: if you are attacked, you can't be thinking, how do I do that block again? It has to be a constant awareness, running through you at all times
Some of my greatest personal achievements have come through kung fu, including winning competition medals both for sparring and for tai chi - the two sides of this style. I train everyday, and it is part of everything that I do. In this way, I ensure that I never stop learning. As well as continuing to train with my instructors, I travel to China as often as possible to learn from masters of different styles. My weapons training covers the Shaolin staff and scholar?s sword, and I have studied anatomy and physiology to increase my understanding of the human body and how best I can help individual students to train.
I have a burning desire to expand the club in the Republic of Ireland, to help perpetuate the style and give as many people as possible the chance to benefit from it. Martial arts in Ireland for the most part consists of karate and kick boxing, but I am determined to show the people of Dublin how amazing a complete system of kung fu such as Fujian White Crane can be.
So for anyone who is thinking of training: be prepared to be stimulated on a physical, mental and emotional level. And be prepared to have fun and enjoy getting fit, and learn something that will help you in very facet of your life.
