I studied Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, London, in the early 1990?s becoming at the same time AMA British Heavyweight Kung Fu Champion two years running. After this I went on to start a career in engineering, becoming a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a senior manager in a large engineering company, whilst becoming an FWC Instructor and setting up the City & Islington Club at the same time.
Kung Fu is a magnificent art. It taught me not to be satisfied with the person that I was, and through changing I learnt that I could achieve anything that I want to. I could have used this to rise to the top in my Engineering career, but I also wanted the opportunity to better myself as a person that I knew I was missing by working in industry (I?m not referring to qualifications or status, but rather to the way one thinks and acts).
By leaving my engineering career behind I took the decision to become the man that I could be, and not be capped by society?s perception of success. I took the decision to change my behavior ? to act with honour, with filial piety and with propriety. It is because most people do not adhere to these values that our society is in the horrific mess that it is in today.
I don?t consider what I do now to be ?work?, because I love it. I teach around 18 hours a week, and still earn more than I would have as an Engineer. I love spending my days with my wife. I?ve been there to see my three children take their first steps and say their first words ? and how many fathers can say that?
Kung Fu teaches you that you only stop striving to improve when you are dead; this is why no man should call himself a master. So I?m proud to be the man that I have become, but still look forwards towards the man that I hope to be one day.
